We were asked to create a piece of design that explained why we would benefit from being involved in a scheme called ‘Design Buddies’. I didn’t want to make just another poster so I came up with the idea of creating a Volvelle which would reveal the answers one by one to make it a bit more interesting and fun. I used this tutorial to help me make the Volvelle http://paperchipmunk.com/?p=107
Back to Uni and straight in to our first brief ‘The Significance of Numbers’. The aim is to create an A3 poster to do with numbers that engages the viewer.
I first thought about times tables and how there are occurring patterns in the answers which always helped me when learning them. That lead me to looking at Geometry and the Bauhaus movement where most things were inspired by geometry. I tried out a few quick design with this in mind but felt it wasn’t going any where so I then thought about lucky numbers and how we all seam to have numbers that are special to us. One of my numbers is number 4 and the more I thought about number 4 the more it made sense that I’d design something around that number. Since a square has 4 corners and 4 sides it seamed a natural shape to work with.
I decided to create a poster which reflects the 4 countries I have lived in and influence who I am today, Sweden, Great Britain, Portugal and Spain. I took the CMYK colours of the national flags of each country and created a checked pattern. The four squares in the middle have a transparency percentage reflecting how much the country reflects my personality. I’ve called the piece ‘All good things come in fours’ because to me they do! The title is a hand drawn type I made with a brush pen.
When it comes to printing I have planned to get my greeting cards printed on an inkjet printer but I’m still not sure what paper to use. Today I’m doing some test prints on a natural paper called Accent Antique 250 gms to see how the paper takes the ink. I like the idea of printing on a natural paper because I think it might give the cards a retro feel but if the ink bleeds I obviously have to rethink. alocalprinter.com was suggested to me. They specialise in eco greeting cards printing and you get the envelopes for free apparently so I will have a better look at what they do later today incase things don’t work out and it would be good to find a printing company that I can use for future projects too.
